Creating Custom Portlets

How to create custom portlets

Custom portlets can be created for the eGov site or for a department within the site. The custom portlets are context-sensitive; e.g., you get the custom portlets defined for the eGov site or department based on what you are currently viewing in the site. The are created in the same way whether for the site or for a department:

  1. Go to the site or department custom folder (/custom or /[dept-id]/custom)
  2. Add a folder, giving it the title you want the custom portlet to have
  3. Publish the folder
  4. Add a link to the folder pointing to the internal or external url you want the portlet link to open. Give it the title you want the link to have in the portlet. Once a link is published, it should show up in a portlet on the left between the Online Services and Resources portlets.
  5. Publish the link
  6. Add additional links and publish them as needed.
  7. Reorder the links as desired using the tools provided by the folder_contents table

Multiple custom portlets can be created by repeating this process; e.g., create one folder with links in custom for each portlet desired.

See the related items below for a sample custom portlet folder and link.
